For starters, what is a crown?
Crowns are a type of dental restoration. They are used to treat teeth that are damaged due to decay or other trauma. The crown covers the entire visible part of the tooth above the gumline. So, it is an appropriate option for patients with more extensive decay that cannot be adequately treated with more conservative restorations. How is a crown made?
Getting your crown at other dentists’ offices would typically involve two trips. The first trip would involve removing damaged areas of the decayed or injured tooth. This step provides a clean slate for your tooth. Measurements and other characteristics of the tooth and neighboring teeth are also collected. An outside lab uses this information to make the crown. A temporary crown is then placed to protect the tooth while the permanent one is being made. It can take several weeks before a return visit is scheduled, at which time the permanent crown is cemented to the tooth. If the bite is off or there are problems with the crown’s appearance, the lab must re-make it. If the crown needs adjustments, a third appointment may be necessary.

How do you make crowns?
