Questions and Answers
When should my child go to the dentist?
The America n Academy of Pediatric Dentistry suggests that children are seen within six months of the eruption of their first tooth or no later than one year. During your appointment, Dr. Eller will examine your child’s dental health and determine if they have any dental needs. Next, he will discuss proper homecare techniques to ensure that your child creates great dental habits early in life!
How often do I need to go to the dentist?
Each patient has unique dental needs. Most patients require cleanings every six months with an exam once a year. Exams are performed at least once per year to ensure that the patient is healthy. The need for Xrays is patient dependent but they are typically taken every two years.
What’s the difference between a Prophy and Periodontal Maintenance?
A Prophylaxis is a cleaning performed on patients without Periodontal Disease. Periodontal Maintenance is a more involved cleaning performed on patients with Periodontal Disease that have undergone Scaling & Root Planing (deep cleaning). Periodontal Maintenance is a more timely and involved cleaning that removes plaque both above and underneath the gumline.
How often should I brush & floss?
Studies have shown that brushing properly after breakfast and before bed along with daily flossing will adequately remove dental plaque. Brushing with a manual toothbrush should last for three to four minutes both morning and night. Electric toothbrushes used correctly get the job done in two minutes both morning and night. One of Alpine Family Dental’s hygienists will happily review your hygiene regimen to ensure that your mouth stays healthy.
Do I still need to go to the dentist if I have Dentures?
Yes. During your annual exam, Dr. Eller will perform an oral cancer screen and check for any signs of disease. Next, Dr. Eller will ensure that your dentures fit and perform well. Ill-fitting dentures can cause irreparable damage to the jawbones.
What should I do if I have bad breath (halitosis)?
Halitosis comes from many different sources. Dietary causes are easily eliminated by removing the odorous foods from our diet (garlic, onions, etc). Bacterial causes are improved by remaining hydrated throughout the day and maintaining proper oral hygiene. Brushing after breakfast and before bed, flossing daily, and scraping the tongue daily will all help to remove odor causing bacteria from the mouth. Also, make sure that you aren’t overdue for your dental cleaning because tartar buildup on the teeth can only be removed by a dental hygienist.
Are silver (amalgam) fillings safe?
Amalgam fillings have been in use for well over a century. Most dentists place amalgam fillings in their patients because it is a very durable, effective, and affordable material. The concern over the trace amount of mercury in silver fillings is scientifically unfounded. Numerous scientific studies have been unable to determine any health risks for patients. Patients who choose to not have silver fillings for esthetic or health concerns may have resin fillings placed. Please visit www.ada.org for more information on amalgam fillings.
